Comelec disqualifies congressional bet Florido for vote-buying

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) 1st Division disqualified Quezon congressional candidate Matt Erwin Florido for vote-buying.

The poll body found substantial evidence that Florido, who is also the mayor of General Luna town, engaged in vote-buying during a gathering on April 5 and 6 in Buenavista town.

Petitioners alleged they were invited to an event where Florido allegedly campaigned and solicited votes after providing food, transportation, t-shirts, and P1,000 cash.

Florido denied the allegations, claiming the petitioners were campaign volunteers and the money was an advance payment for expenses, stating, "Hindi totoo na namimili ako ng boto. Kailanman ay hindi ko yan gagawin."

The Comelec was not convinced by Florido's explanation and canceled his Certificate of Candidacy (CoC).

Florido stated he will file an appeal with the Comelec en banc and potentially the Supreme Court, while his name will remain on the ballot for now.
