Comelec commissioner ready to face bribery charges

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Aimee Neri is prepared to face charges regarding allegations of accepting P10 million to influence a Supreme Court case.

Lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, representing convicted drug lord Herbert Colanggo, claimed Neri, then a Justice Assistant Secretary, received the bribe money to fix Colanggo's robbery case.

Topacio stated that Neri allegedly only returned P7 million of the P10 million, and Colanggo's daughter was later arrested for extortion when she attempted to recover the remaining P3 million.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez confirmed that Commissioner Neri is ready to address the accusations in the appropriate legal venue and maintains that the claims are unsubstantiated.

The Comelec will also monitor whether Colanggo's legal team will oppose Neri's confirmation before the Commission on Appointments.
