Comelec chief confirms Smartmatic data leak, election security unaffected

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) chief, Saidamen Pangarungan, confirmed that Smartmatic, the provider for the 2022 automated elections, experienced a data leak unrelated to the election, pertaining to their internal organization and activities.

The employee involved in the incident has been dismissed and has provided the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) with names, dates, and places related to the alleged data breach in a sworn affidavit.

Smartmatic assured Comelec that the security of ballots and configured SD cards remains uncompromised by this internal data leak.

Comelec is awaiting the official report from the NBI before deciding on any further actions against Smartmatic.
