Cebu City imposes extreme lockdown amid COVID-19 surge

Cebu City is under an extreme lockdown with suspended quarantine passes as of Tuesday night due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Mayor Edgardo C. Labella announced the drastic measure after an Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) team observed many people still out on the streets.

The city, which has the highest number of cases in the country at over 4,800, was already placed under the strictest quarantine category since June 16.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año stated that only authorized persons outside residence (APORs) and essential workers are allowed on the streets.

Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu, assigned by President Duterte to oversee measures, indicated that hard lockdowns might be imposed on barangays with massive infections.

The national IATF, headed by Cabinet members, visited Cebu City to assess and plan response measures.

Cebu Provincial Governor Gwendolyn F. Garcia announced that the province will close its borders with Cebu City starting Friday, June 26.

Provincial residents working in the city must choose between staying in the city or returning to their local government units by Friday, with no exceptions for employment certificates.
