Catholic Church recognizes seven Filipinos as new martyrs

The Catholic Church has officially recognized seven Filipinos as "new martyrs" of the 21st century due to their sacrifices and steadfast faith.

A special commemoration for these seven individuals will take place on November 9, coinciding with the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica.

Among the honored is Fr. Rhoel Gallardo, who was kidnapped and killed by Abu Sayyaf extremists in 2000 after being held captive for 44 days with teachers and students of Claret School of Tumahubong.

Four worshippers from the Prelature of Marawi – Junrey Taub Barbante, Janine Orcia Arenas, Evangeline Salces Aromin, and Riza Ramos Daniel – were also recognized for their deaths in the 2023 Marawi bombing at Mindanao State University.

Fr. Marcelito Paez, nominated by the Diocese of San Jose, Nueva Ecija, is also included for his advocacy for social justice, human rights, and farmers' welfare, having been killed in an ambush in 2017 after assisting in the release of political prisoners.
