Carlos Yulo named 2024 PSA Athlete of the Year

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo was overwhelmingly chosen as the 2024 Athlete of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA).

He achieved historic success at the 2024 Paris Olympics, topping the men's floor exercise and vault events for the Philippines' first double Olympic gold medals.

The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) will also be recognized as the National Sports Association of the Year for their role in nurturing talent.

This marks the first time in 60 years Filipina gymnasts participated in the Olympics, with Aleah Finnegan, Emma Malabuyo, and Levi Jung-Ruivivar competing.

Yulo also secured multiple gold medals at the Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

He is the first gymnast to receive the Athlete of the Year award since Pia Adelle Reyes in 1997.

Yulo will be honored at the PSA's annual awards night on January 27.

The gymnast previously shared a personal struggle, revealing he "wanted to just simply vanish" and "nearly took" his own life before finding solace in prayer.
