BJMP, BuCor suspend jail visits amid COVID-19 scare

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has suspended jail visits in its facilities in the National Capital Region (NCR) until March 25, 2020, to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has also implemented a week-long suspension of visitation privileges, starting March 11, 2020, in the New Bilibid Prison and all its other prison facilities.

These decisions follow the Department of Health's declaration of Code Red Alert (Sub Level 1) and President Duterte's declaration of a Public Health emergency over COVID-19.

BJMP spokesman Jail Inspector Xavier Solda stated that new measures may be decided on in the next two weeks.

Service providers, including food providers, teachers, instructors, and volunteer lawyers, are exempted from the BJMP ban.

The suspension comes as the Philippines reported 33 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of March 11, 2020, and Metro Manila mayors have agreed to cooperate on contact tracing.
