Bishop-emeritus Warlito Cajandig dies at 81

Bishop-emeritus Warlito Cajandig of the Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan passed away at 81 in Iloilo City on October 21, 2025, at 7:18 a.m. after succumbing to a prolonged illness.

He had been in a coma since September 1, 2018, following a debilitating stroke.

Pope John Paul II appointed Cajandig as the fifth bishop of Calapan in April 1989.

Prior to this, he was among the pioneering clergy of the Diocese of Romblon after its establishment in 1974, having been ordained a priest in 1970 for the Archdiocese of Capiz.

Following Cajandig's stroke, Pope Francis appointed Nestor Adalia as the apostolic administrator of the vicariate in November 2018.

His episcopal consecration took place on June 21, 1989, at the Manila Cathedral, with Jaime Cardinal Sin as the principal consecrator.

He led the vicariate for 33 years until the Vatican "liberated" him from his post for health reasons in November 2022 at the age of 78.
