BI probes mayor's citizenship amid fake papers, scam allegations

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is investigating the Filipino citizenship of Pagadian City Mayor Samuel Co amid insinuations he might be a Chinese national with fake papers, similar to the case of former Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo.

BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval stated that the bureau will thoroughly investigate and review internal records to determine the veracity of the allegations.

While Co's supposed birth certificate indicates he was born in Pagadian City, residents in the area said the stated birthing facility, Clinica Santo Niño, never existed.

Searches for the birth, marriage, and death certificates of his parents were also unsuccessful, though his parents were buried in a Chinese cemetery in Pagadian City.

The investigation also comes as Mayor Co faces renewed attention for alleged involvement in the P12-billion Aman Futures pyramid scam in 2013, which he denies.
