BI mandates direct flights for POGO fugitive deportations

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has mandated direct flights for the deportation of foreign fugitives linked to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGOs), unless no direct route is available, through BI Board of Commissioners Resolution No. 2025-02.

Immigration Commissioner Joel Viado stated this policy aims to close a loophole exploited by POGO deportees and aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s POGO ban.

Viado also noted that the measure could reduce opportunities for POGO-linked individuals to expand operations in other Asian countries.

The BI is coordinating with airlines and foreign embassies for implementation and exploring further security enhancements, including international law enforcement collaboration.

This policy was influenced by discussions and viewpoints from Senate hearings, particularly from Senators Risa Hontiveros and Sherwin Gatchalian, who had called for stricter deportation measures.
