BI facilitates repatriation of nearly 10,000 foreign seafarers

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has facilitated the repatriation of almost 10,000 foreign seafarers who were stranded on cruise ships in Manila Bay since April.

A total of 9,854 foreign seafarers were cleared for departure as of August 19 after testing negative for COVID-19 via RT-PCR swab tests.

Additionally, over 19,300 Filipino seamen have been reunited with their families after being stranded on vessels anchored in Manila Bay, also undergoing mandatory COVID-19 testing.

BI Seaport Operations Chief Alnazib Decampong emphasized the importance of ensuring the health and safety of repatriated seamen and their families.

The number of cruise ships anchored in Manila Bay has significantly decreased from 57 in April to only four, with minimal crew remaining for maintenance purposes.
