Bacolod City allocates P20M for COVID-19 testing lab

Bacolod City is allocating P20 million to establish a molecular biology laboratory at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) to test for COVID-19.

The facility will cater to patients from Bacolod and Negros Occidental, addressing the inconvenience of sending samples to laboratories in Iloilo and Cebu due to border controls.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia decided to proceed with the project using city funds due to the inadequate testing capacity of the DOH laboratory in Iloilo, which can only process about 200 specimens daily for the entire Western Visayas region.

He has expressed confidence that the CLMMRH medical chief, Dr. Julius Drilon, will ensure the biolab is installed within 45-60 days, complying with DOH and Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) protocols.

The city government will also use P5 million to purchase test kits compatible with the Iloilo biolab and eventually the new Bacolod biolab.
