Cotabato mayor arrested for gun ban violation

Anwar Saluwa, the appointed mayor of Nabalawag in Cotabato, and three security aides were arrested for violating the Comelec's nationwide gun ban.

They were apprehended at a Comelec checkpoint in Toril, Davao City, after authorities spotted a gun inside their vehicle.

During inspection, police recovered two pistols and ammunition from the mayor and his companions.

The suspects failed to present a Comelec clearance allowing them to carry firearms.

Charges for violation of the Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act and the Omnibus Election Code will be filed against them.

"The election gun ban applies to all regardless of status in society and position in government. No one is exempted from complying with the law," said Maj. Sheryl Bautista, Toril police acting chief.
