Agri chief sees big jump in rice, corn output

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. is optimistic about a significant increase in rice and corn production for the Philippines in the second quarter of 2025.

This projection is based on improved weather patterns and government initiatives aimed at boosting agricultural output.

The agriculture sector showed a rebound in the first quarter of 2025, growing by 2.2 percent after a slower growth in the previous year due to El Niño.

The Philippine Statistics Authority estimates palay output to reach 4.36 million metric tons in the second quarter of 2025, a 13 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.

This anticipated rise in production is attributed to a larger harvest area, which is up by 9.2 percent, and enhanced crop yields.
