Authorities have raided three auto surplus shops in Davao City for allegedly engaging in the illegal importation and rebuilding of right-hand-drive vehicles.
The implicated shops, identified as JP Malik Trucks and Equipment Corp., Mahar Motor Surplus Corp., and Umar Japan OPC, are not accredited by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to import, rebuild, or sell such vehicles.
During the operation on May 21, employees were observed actively rebuilding right-hand-drive motor vehicles on the premises.
LTO Chief Vigor Mendoza II stated that these raids are part of ongoing efforts against illegal activities, with charges expected to be filed.
He emphasized that the importation of right-hand-drive vehicles is illegal under Republic Act 8506, which carries penalties of imprisonment and a fine of P50,000.
Approximately 42 right-hand-drive vehicles were impounded from Umar Japan OPC, one from Mahar Motor Surplus Corp., and two trucks from JP Malik Trucks and Equipment Corp., totaling 45 vehicles.
