1Sambayan to name 2022 bets in September

The opposition coalition 1Sambayan plans to reveal its roster of candidates for the 2022 national and local elections in September, according to lead convener retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio.

Carpio mentioned that 1Sambayan is still in the process of receiving nominations and expects to finalize their selections by late September.

The coalition has named six individuals as nominees for president and vice president: Vice President Leni Robredo, Sen. Grace Poe, Deputy Speaker Vilma Santos-Recto, Deputy Speaker Eddie Villanueva, former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, and lawyer Chel Diokno.

Senator Panfilo Lacson, who has declared his presidential bid with Senate President Vicente Sotto III as his running mate, was invited but declined to participate in 1Sambayan's selection process.

Carpio emphasized that individuals not chosen by 1Sambayan are expected to support the coalition's chosen candidate to ensure a unified opposition slate for the presidential race.

The main objective of 1Sambayan is to field a single candidate for president, believing this strategy offers the best chance to defeat President Duterte's candidate.
