A total of 126 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) were released by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) to commemorate the Philippines' 126th Independence Day.
Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Margarita Gutierrez and BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. led a ceremony for the release.
Of the 126 released PDLs, 61 were from the New Bilibid Prison complex in Muntinlupa City.
Additionally, 16 were from the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City, 22 from the Davao Prison and Penal Farm, 10 from the San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm, eight from the Leyte Regional Prison, eight from the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm, and one from the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla advised the freed PDLs to value their second chance and continue their reformation.
This release adds to the 14,324 PDLs who have been freed under the current administration.
