1 student dead, 17 injured as bus plunges into ravine in Quezon

A student, identified as Joshua Lopez, 17, was killed and 17 others were injured when a Bobis Liner bus plunged into a ravine in Gumaca, Quezon.

The bus reportedly suffered engine trouble while traversing a curved, descending portion of the diversion road.

The driver lost control, hitting the Lopezes who were walking along the roadside before the vehicle went off the road and into the ravine.

Joshua Lopez died instantly from severe head and body injuries, while his cousin, Ivan Lopez, 17, sustained injuries and was taken to the Gumaca District Hospital.

Seventeen passengers on board were also injured and received medical treatment.

The bus driver, Arnel Brotamante, is currently in police custody as the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The accident prompted authorities to temporarily close the affected portion of the road.
